More than 200 students from the Tempe Union High School District, including Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe students, spent Tuesday morning at McClintock High School with kids who could use a boost this holiday season.

Each TUHSD student donated $20, which bought a toy for a student from Edison Elementary School in Mesa. On Tuesday, they distributed the gifts and spent time with the kids.

The day marked the 10th anniversary of the program, called "Smiles of Christmas," and the sixth year it has been hosted by McClintock.

Community service and the holidays go together like smiling children and gift exchanges.

Many Valley high-school students spent the weeks leading up to their holiday vacations donating time and talent to the less fortunate, learning to be charitable through school choirs, student government and key clubs.

Some stayed in their neighborhoods or within their own school to help; others served the needy far away.

Christmas came early for 200 Thew Elementary School students Thursday at the annual Smiles of Christmas event, held at the McClintock High School football field.

In this student-led mentor charity event, students representing Tempe Union High School District's six comprehensive campuses were paired with a Thew student for a morning of activities including a visit with Santa, arts and crafts, inflatables and a pizza lunch.
